    Description

Two (2) 1910 WESTMORELAND ROOKWOOD MILK GLASS VASES NATIVE AMERICAN LAMP BASE
Wonderful, Circa 1905-1910's, Westmoreland (or possibly Fostoria) "Art Decorated", Milk Glass Vase in the "Rookwood Brown" color and featuring fantastic images of Native American Indians, one believed to represent the great Chiricahua Apache Leader, Geronimo, the other a Native American Chieftain on Horseback.
These very attractive Art Decorated Vases measure approx. 8 3/4” tall and 4” in diameter at the base. They feature these fantastic images of the Native American Indians mentioned above, one whom does resemble Geronimo to a great degree.
For many years this style of decorated Milk Glassware (referred to by collectors as "Art Decorated" Glass) was believed to have been manufactured by Fostoria although no catalog or price list evidence has ever been found confirming this. In 1995, however, a scrapbook belonging to the family of George R. West (one of the founders of Westmoreland Specialty Company) which included a ca1910 print advertisement depicting pieces of this brown colored "Art Decorated" Milk Glass along with "a family photograph taken at a 1910 trade show that shows George R. West and his son, George L. West" with steins and tankards in this pattern. It is interesting to note the ad states: "Pottery effects are simulated with exactitude for the first time in glass." and that the Glassware was available on "Purple and Rookwood Brown". It is possible that both Westmoreland and Fostoria produced this line but the only period evidence (other than employee's oral memories) confirms that it was made by Westmoreland.
Then many years back, mid century or so, these vases were converted to lamp bases. The bases were filled in with some unknown material and the lamp caps were installed as you see in the photos. They are configured so the wiring will come out the side at the top of the vase. I had considered finishing these off and selling them as lamps but would rather leave that up to the buyer to configure the way that they would wish. Perhaps a candle lamp or a small battery lamp etc. That will be up to you if you indeed are the buyer.
This very attractive, Native American Indian Image, Art Decorated Milk Glass Vase are in very good condition - the colors are rich and warm and the decoration is very well preserved with no significant surface scratches or nicks. There is a hairline fracture to the left of the picture of Geronimo. This you will see in the photos. It seems to have been abated with whatever was filled into the base in years past. It does not seem to be growing. The other lamp with the horse rider on it has some of the material moving around in the very top. This is very slight and would not affect any work you would want to do to it. The rest of the condition of these lamps you can see in the photos. Please feel free to ask any questions prior to your purchase and I will do my best to answer them.
