    Description

    WHAT YOU ARE BUYING
    Navajo MOTHER IN LAW TURQUOISE & SILVER Hand Stamped BELL / Pendant
    DESCRIPTION
    We are proud to offer this rare and hard to find blue turquoise & silver "mother-in-law" bell    It is in the shape of a woman... presumably the mother in law.  The blue turquoise stone has natural mineral lines in it.  There are hand stamped detail on the bottom of the skirt.  Her arms are on her hips which gives a place to tie a leather rope.  It normally worn hanging from either a belt or bag.  This is not a typical tourist item, but most likely made for use within the tribe itself.
    In the Navajo culture it was taboo for a married man to see his wife's mother and vice versa.  The bell was supposed to give a warning.  This particular bell has a very pleasing high tone.
    The time period for this is early 20th Century (1890's to 1930's).  The few we've found were identified as 1915 or 1920.  There are no marks on it although tested to be silver ... most likely coin silver.
    It is a perfect estate piece to start or add to your collection!  If you gift it to your mother in law ... we won't tell her the reason behind it!

    DIMENSIONS
    It is about 2 5/8 inch tall.  The diameter of the skirt is about 1 3/8 inch.
    CONDITION
    Good condition.  The wear is normal and appropriate to an item of this age.
    Since these items were previously used and loved, there will be small scratches and signs of wear.   We feel these characteristics are part of the history of these wonderful things and should not detract from the use of them today.  Please understand this when you make your decision to buy previously loved items.
