    Description

Early 1900s Two Grey Hills Navajo loom, Storm Pattern.  Roughly 64 x 40"
This belonged to a family member and was a wall display from 1970 to 2004, and in safely wrapped storage since then except for consideration of this listing (more about that below.)  It was originally acquired around 1940 in New Mexico, but several assessments concur that this was woven earlier, c 1920.
From a professional (signed and notarized) assessment in 1990:
"Navajo Rug.  Two Gray Hills area, early 20th century.  An early example from what is considered the finest area of Navajo rug weaving.  The double border is dark brown and white, the blending of the natural colors of the wool is typical of the area.  The rug has meander patterns, connecting blocks with a touch of red, interlocked diamonds and multiple triangles.  The ground color is a blend of gray and brown.  It is tightly woven and is in pristine condition.  Wool.  ,000."
It has been 30 years since then, and it would no longer qualify as pristine, but it remains in surprisingly very good condition. The selvage cord has loosened in a few places and allowed an area along one edge and corner to loosen.  That was noticed upon inspection in considering offering it for sale, and was sent off to Colorado for repair but he refused as he felt that would ruin the historical integrity of the piece.
As a flat weave, either side can be displayed.  On one side a portion of the edges has sun bleaching, now appearing brown while the other side remains a deep black.  The images attempt to show the areas of fading, the selvage cord condition, and the edge and corner condition.  Both sides are imaged.  Given its age alone, this is overall still remarkably tightly woven with vibrant colors.
