    Description

    Welcome!
I present for your consideration a rare spoon made of hand worked ingot and hand stamped with the same stamps that Ike (Austin) Wilson used on a bracelet that I recently sold, so I'm attributing the spoon to the work of Ike (Austin) Wilson. This spoon has his arrow stamp, a specific arrow he used on several pieces I have seen, and it has a rolling logs symbol, too. It probably dates to the 1930s.
Ike Wilson was represented in Adair and the CG Wallace catalog for Sotheby's auction and his work is very highly prized. He is most noted for work like that on this spoon: hand stamping of this nature. In great part due to Barton Wright's books Ike Wilson was confused with Austin Wilson and his extended bow and arrow hallmark was attributed to to Austin Wilson, but it was Ike Wilson's hallmark and also was his work. It appears that Barton Wright confused the two men, saying Ike was Austin and attributing Ike's extended bow and arrow hallmark to Austin. Then the authors perpetuated the mistake by copying from the prior authors. So by then the mistake was entrenched and Ike Wilson's work and hallmark was considered to be Austin Wilson's work and hallmark. It was Ike who was the spectacular artist and used the extended bow and arrow hallmark. It recently got sorted out with thanks to Ernie Bulow who did current research on the matter.
This is a superb example and of great collectible value. Many of his pieces were not signed and especially silverware like this wasn't signed early on, though he began to sign his pieces more often, later. I guarantee this is his work. I've owned very many signed pieces of his. Yes, it's museum worthy. Ike (Austin) Wilson's work is quite rare outside the museums and best collections. Current research finds the creator of this work and the extended bow and arrow hallmark was Ike Wilson not Austin Wilson. The most scholarly researcher on the matter, in my estimation, Ernie Bulow, has studied this thoroughly.
This wonderful spoon is about 4-3/4" long, the bowl is 1-3/8" wide and the handle at the widest is 1/2" wide. It weighs 10.6 grams.
Although not signed nor marked for silver content, that is usual for that period of time. It is sterling silver and I believe it's a terrific piece by Ike Wilson, (previously referred to as Austin Wilson, who was a separate person who used an unknown hallmark), based on the stamps that are like that on the signed bracelet above (the bracelet is not included in this auction, but the pictures above will help you compare the stamps) and the arrow stamp which is also a stamp he has used. This is a rare example of a spoon by him and I think it's highly collectible and museum worthy. It's beautiful.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. All the books have errors, so in addition to counterchecking, I have developed some expertise over the years and I do care about getting it right, so as more information comes to light I update my listings and also get in touch with my previous buyers, to inform them of any changes in attributions. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
