Very rare and beautiful, ca1880's Native American Northern Plains / Sioux Indian Pipe with Catlinite Pipe Bowl and Paint Decorated Puzzle Type, Cut Out Stem.
This simply fantastic, late 19th century Pipestone and wood Carved, Cut Out Stem Sioux Pipe measures approx. 24" long overall and is made up of 2 parts – an 18 1/2" long, hand carved wood and mineral pigment decorated Stem and what appears to be its original, hand carved, 5 1/2" long Catlinite Pipe Bowl. The Pipe Bowl is expertly carved with smooth surfaces and elegant lines with a rich and warm, age appropriate surface patina.
The body of the Stem measures approx. 18 1/2” long, 2” wide and 1/2” thick. There are two cut out sections at the posterior end of the Stem and while the cut outs and the paint decoration are in the style of a Puzzle Stem, this Stem has a central draw hole that extends between the two cut out elements. The internal surfaces of the Stem’s cut outs are decorated with red mineral pigment and the outer sides of the Stem features a green mineral pigment paint decoration.
The hand carved, Pipestone / Catlinite Pipe Bowl measures approx. 5 1/2” and features a rich and warm, age appropriate surface patina.
This Pipe Stem and Bowl came to us from a west coast collection and appear to be original to each other. The Stem fits snugly into the Bowl and both pieces are of the same age (second half of the 19th century). This wonderful Catlinite Bowl and Decorated Cut Out Stem Northern Plains Pipe is stunningly beautiful and a museum quality piece.

This very rare and very beautiful, ca1880's Catlinite Pipe Bowl and Paint Decorated Cut Out Pipe Stem are in very good condition. The Pipe Bowl is very attractive but is chipped at the anterior end and has some chips and discoloration around the bowl opening from use. The Bowl is carved from a single piece of Pipestone and is quite beautiful. The Paint Decorated, Cut Out Stem is very well preserved with no damage and no repairs of any kind to the wood. The Stem retains its original wood fitting which fits snugly into the Bowl. All elements of the Pipe are original and there has been no repairs or restorations - this wonderful Catlinite Pipe Bowl and Paint Decorated, Cut Out Stem are 100% original and 100% beautiful.
