Very rare and original, ca1880's Native American Northern Plains (possibly Plains Chippewa) Indian Catlinite Pipe Bowl and Quill Decorated Stem.
This outstanding18th century Pipestone and wood Carved Pipe measures approx. 30" long overall and is made up of 2 parts - a 28" long painted and quill wrapped carved wood stem and a 3 1/2" long Catlinite Pipe Bowl.
The Pipe features a thin stem carved down from three raised, cylinder shaped elements. The raised elements retain remnants of the original paint decoration while the thin lengths are wrapped with multi-colored quills.
The Pipestone Elbow Shaped Bowl features a rich and warm surface patina and an ultra smooth, hand worn feel that attests to decades of use.
The Catlinite Pipe Bowl and Quillwork Stem offered here are unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. They are NOT reproductions or modern recreations but an original Northern Plains Indian Ceremonial Pipe crafted in the fourth quarter of the 19th century. The Pipe Bowl and Stem come with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. This very rare and original, ca1880's Northern Plains Catlinite Pipe Bowl and Quill Decorated Stem are in very good condition. The Pipe Bowl is very well preserved with some discoloration around the bowl opening from use and a few minuscule flea bites at the edges. It features a wonderful, rich and warm surface patina and an exceptionally smooth “feel” attesting to years of use. It is carved from a single piece of Pipestone and, although the shape is simply, the Bowl is very beautiful.
The Quill Wrapped and Paint Decorated Stem is also in very good condition. There is no physical damage or repairs to the hand carved wood substrate. The raised elements of the Stem retain remnants of the original red and green surface paint as can be seen in the scans below. There is loss to the original quill wrap as also can be seen in the scans below. The Pipe is 100% original and has had no repairs or restoration.
